Anthony & Star

Anthony & Star- 10th & Pine

Oh Anthony, always looking so dang put together. I have recently starting joking with him when we cross paths that he is verging on having to be considered the It's My Darlin' mascot. I can't resist taking his photo every time I see him on the hill. Such great style. On this day he also had his friend's dog Star with him. She was such a sweet dog.

It was starting to rain when I took this photo. Because the rain is a big part of our lives here in Seattle we approach the situation a little differently than other places I have lived. In most cities people throw on a rain coat or get out their umbrella on rainy days. Here in Seattle there is some rain gear on the wet days but the majority of people just throw on their hood or walk more briskly to where they are going. I guess when the rain is a regular part of your life you just become indifferent to it or you make a conscious decision not to let it determine how you dress.

Louise & Emilie

Louise & Emily- 2nd & Pine downtown Seattle
These lovely ladies came to Seattle from Denmark to study landscape architecture. What a beautiful thing to get the opportunity to study. Since meeting them I have thought a lot about how interesting this field would be.

Celina

Celina- Outside of Redlight on Broadway

For most, less is more. For some more is great. I love everything about Celina's style from the different textures of her layering to the mix of gold bling around her neck and vintage buttons on her jacket. She's mixing it up in all the right ways.

Bill Cunningham New York

The majority of us trudge through the work week counting down the hours until the weekend or our next vacation because work is... well, work. It is always so refreshing and intriguing to come across someone on a whole different trajectory when it comes to their job. For these people, there is no definite line between work time and play time because they enjoy what they do for a living so much that they can't imagine their life without it. Bill Cunningham is such a prime example of living life as so and, through a exploration of his life, this documentary gives you beautiful glimpse into why that might be.

As the camera follows him around during his day to day life in New York, and on a trip to Paris, Bill exudes a sense of blissful focus and attention to the world around him always with a beaming smile on his face. A smile that turned out to be highly contagious as I bore a similar ear to ear grin during almost the entire film. As the filmmakers interviewed New York City socialites, editors, and fellow artists about Bill everyone seemed immediately lifted and filled with joy just speaking about him and the fervent approach he has towards his work.

At one point in the movie you see Bill's last minute scramble to pick up his film containing the pictures he is going to use for his "On the Street" feature in the New York Times. You heard me, actual film! I found myself longing for a time before everything was digital and quick. There is a undeniable charm to the life of simplicity that Bill leads. Though he can be found at all of the biggest social events everything else in his life is unembellished and sincere. He lives amongst those leading the most glamorous of lives while finding the utmost enjoyment in capturing it rather than taking part. His home at the time this film was made resided above the magnificent Carnegie Hall but this studio apartment was a small room filled with file cabinets and a small bed nestled in between. No kitchen, no closets, only a communal bathroom down the hallway... and that was just the way he liked it. I couldn't help but start to recognize all of the things I think I have to have in my life that I would probably be happier without.

Watching this film and having the opportunity to see the way that Bill Cunningham perceives fashion really resonated with me. His perspective on fashion is based only on what catches his eye as he walks the streets each day and in a world where we are bombarded from every direction with images, media, advertisements and celebrity his kind of unbiased view is hard to come by. His ability to ride through New York every day on his bike and recognize the beauty in everyone around him proved by the end of the film to be about so much more than identifying fashion in the traditional sense. He is able to document the changes in how people express who they are through what they wear. As he says, "If we all went out looking like a slob like me it would be a pretty dreary world".

Yes, lovers of fashion and the New York will adore this film but I am certain that those who have no interest in either of the two will enjoy it just as much. It is a story about the eccentric fashion world that Bill Cunningham lives within but even more so it is a unique look into the life of a truly extraordinary person.

Bill Cunningham New York opens on Friday, April 29th at the Harvard Exit Theatre on Capitol Hill. Go see this one readers. It is an absolute joy and you will leave the theater feeling much better than when you arrived.

Hill Style- Katie & Katie

I completely forgot to show you guys my post for CHS last Thursday. I chose a few photos that I took of this fantastic duo. They have been best friends since grade school and stayed in touch despite living states apart. A story near and dear to my heart as I have the same history with my two closest friends. Looking back I must say that it would have been pretty awesome in grades chool to have the same name as your best friend...

They both have a style that is beautifully understated. One of those where I start to notice all the details once I am up close and chatting.

Jane- Fremont Sunday Market

What a classic beauty. The high bun, the draping oversize layers, and a great smile. I found Jane outside my favorite treasure hunting spot. The underground flea market in Fremont.

Colin & Lauren

Colin & Lauren- Ballard Sunday Market

I hear people refer to bolo ties often as a fashion faux pas and generally the only time that I see them is when they are worn ironically by the hipster crowd with very busy/sloppy outfits. On a recent episode of TBTL Luke was talking about this phenomenon and his annoyance with the accessory. Understandable, but his conversation on the show prompted me to post this photo I took at the Ballard market a while back. I talk often about never disqualifying an item of clothing or an accessory because, in the right context, I think anything can look good. Last year, when I was a guest on an episode of KUOW's Weekday, Steve Scher asked if/when the bolo tie would ever come back into style and I said I thought that it definitely could. Although clothing and accessories always lose their appeal for me when they become a widespread trend I do think that this and most any other style can be worn well if paired with the right outfit and the right attitude. Colin looks great wearing this look and is a perfect example of the bolo tie done right. I really like both he and Lauren's classic and clean style. And a bag of fresh market goodies in the hand is always a great look for everyone too...

Worn Out!

Last Friday night I was invited to attend the Stranger's Worn Out fashion show. I didn't plan on taking photos but brought my camera just incase I changed my mind once I got there. Well I was glad that I did. Not only were the runway collections fantastic but I also ran into some really unique outfits in the audience before the show started.

So many things that I love about this outfit...

Now, mind you. I almost never take photos inside so I don't have the proper equipment but I managed to snap a few shots that came out. I was so sad to get home and find that my photos of Tarboo's designs didn't come out very well because they did such an amazing job with their line. I would have loved to show you all of it. But alas, only two decent photos. I was so excited to see that Jamie Von Sratton designed several pieces for the show. Remember her, I took her photo off duty about a year ago. She modeled a few of her own designs and her hair and makeup were almost as stunning as the dresses. The grand finali of the show was the costume work of Mark Mitchell. His designs are absolutely remarkable and made everyone in the audience smile. I can't image the hours that must go into the work that he creates. Stella Rose Saint Clair, who has also been photographed on the street for It's My Darlin' designed the hats worn with Mark's dresses.

Ogechi & Stephanie

Ogechi & Stephanie- 5th & Pine Downtown Seattle

I took Ogechi's photo back in the early days of It's My Darlin'. When I went back to look at her photo I ended up scrolling through several old street style pictures and really enjoyed finding all the differences in how we dressed less than two years ago. There are also still a lot of similarities though. That was part of why I thought it would be fun to start this site and I am already getting to the evolution (or lack of evolution) of Seattle style that I was hoping to track.

Hill Style: Brianna

My pick this week for the CHS Hill Style post was Brianna. The choice may have been slightly biased as I LOVE knitting and found her outfit to be extra great with the addition of the blanket that she was working on. I believe I have only taken one other photo of someone knitting... For more photos of Brianna's outfit check out my post over at CHS.
