2019: A Year in Review

I've compiled the photos I posted over the last year that brought me the most joy and that I feel summarize what looks caught my eye in in 2019. It was such a fun year for style. Rainbow colors, clever layers, see-through fabric, non-gender conforming looks, and body positivity made for one of my favorite years yet of photographing street style.

It was also by far the most difficult year to date for finding style shots. I had to hunt for longer to find a great photo and often came home after a full day out in the city having taking no style photographs.  I haven't quite wrapped my head around why it has become more difficult for me to find people in Seattle to photograph in the last few years. Maybe it's an evolving city where creatives can no longer afford to live in the areas that they once did... OR maybe it's just me having done this for too long and what stands out as unique personal style for me is what has evolved. Either way, I still really enjoy this documentation so I continue to do it.

Moving to Phoenix in October also brought its own set of challenges since this isn't a walking city like Seattle. I'm finding new ways to document street style here because rather than crossing paths with people walking around on the street I need to find the events or parts of town where people with unique personal style spend time. It's a fun challenge. Send me your ideas if you have any :) :)

Happy New Year! I'm so excited for what's ahead in 2020.

Artist Erika Lenaye | Phoenix Flea | Downtown Phoenix

I met Erika at her artist booth during Phoenix Flea. Her work is beautiful desert inspired paintings and prints often featuring dreamy female figures. I have been loving seeing how this area inspires people's creativity. You can really tell that the Sonoran Desert is Erika's muse. Check her out: @erikalenaye

Cassie | Uptown Farmers Market | Central Phoenix

The farmers markets here are massive! It seems like they might be opposite of Seattle and it's currently peak market season right now. I'll be curious to see what happens with the markets once summer hits here.

I found Cassie and her dog at the Uptown Farmers Market in the Bethany Home neighborhood of Central Phoenix.

Courtney | Heritage Square | Downtown Phoenix

First Phoenix street style post! It took me a bit to figure out where to go looking but I'm starting to get a handle on where to hunt for street style photos here in Phoenix. It's such a sprawling city that people don't commonly walk around like they do in Seattle. So I'll mostly be finding photos in the downtown area and at events around the city. I've got quite a few photos to post. One common thread I've found amongst the people I have photographed and interacted with so far here is that everyone in Phoenix is unbelievably friendly. It's definitely a welcomed change of pace after 12 years of The Seattle Freeze.

I found Courtney in Heritage Square, a historic block of downtown Phoenix with beautiful old homes and an arboretum. You can find Courtney on Instagram under the handle @courtp.age.

Outside Bimbos | Capitol Hill

This feels like such an appropriate final Seattle street style photo to post. Right in the heart of Capitol Hill where I lived and did most of my photography throughout my 12 years in Seattle.

I've snuck in a couple photoshoots at the homes of Seattle creatives before moving. You'll be seeing those in the upcoming weeks.

Then! I'm looking forward to sharing some of Phoenix with you over the next year or two while we live in this part of country. It's pretty incredible down here. There's so much to explore and I'm loving all of it. Uprooting and being somewhere entirely different from what I know has me feeling seriously inspired. I'm drawing more than usual, learning about natural botanical dyeing techniques outside of indigo, and coming up with a new class booklet for my calligraphy lessons. It will be interesting to see which one pulls me in the most and gets the majority of my focus.

Have a great weekend!

-Dana

Now that we're sort of settled in here in Phoenix I got a chance to sit down and edit photos that I took my last month in Seattle. I'm really going to miss this city. I've got a handful of Seattle photos to share with you as well as style shots from the Big Mood event at MOHAI that took place the night before we left town.

Bronte | North Capitol Hill

The dial on my camera had accidentally flipped over to a setting other than manual for this photo and it created some seriously weird light for the image but this look is too good not to post.

We're hitting the road with all of our belongings bright and early tomorrow. Tonight I'll be spending part of my last evening in Seattle at MOHAI photographing the stylish attendees of the Big Mood event that Adria Garcia and Kim Selling are putting on starting at 6pm. Hope to see you there, its going to be amazing!!

Goodbye Seattle Apartment... For Now

Wow, this Thursday Don and I are packing up a U-haul and starting a 4 day trek to our new home in the desert. It's My Darlin' will now be based out of Phoenix, AZ for a bit. Last week, while packing everything up into boxes, it really hit me that this is all happening. We've lived in Seattle for almost 13 years, which is the longest either of us have lived anywhere in our lives. I know we'll return one day but at this point we have no solid plan aside from a couple years in Arizona. After that we'll see where the wind takes us!

I've finished up at my day job, packed up (almost) all of our belongings, given a ton of stuff away, prepped all the plants I didn't sell for their upcoming journey, and gotten our condo ready to be rented out. I love this apartment so much. I've nested hard here. I just hope that the renters we have in the upcoming years enjoy this light filled treehouse as much as we have.

Before I started packing I got some photos of the apartment to use on the rental listing. I've never photographed a place before moving out before. It'll be fun to always have these pictures to remember our home exactly how I had it. It looks like we have some renters all lined up until next year but if you want me to keep you in mind for upcoming vacancies while we are away then let me know and I'll put you on the list of people to contact when that comes up next.

Here's our place!
