Woodland Tulip Festival

Woodland Tulip Festival

Woodland Tulip Festival

Woodland Tulip Festival
I keep meaning to post these photos. On the way home from Portland a couple weekends ago we stopped at a diner for breakfast in a little town just over the Washington-Oregon border called Woodland. After our massive greasy spoon breakfast at American Family Diner our server asked if we were in town for the tulip festival... we told him that we didn't know about a tulip festival... he excitedly told us all about it and insisted we go. Can't say no to that.

The Woodland Tulip Festival is much smaller than the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and as a result, much less crowded. It was such a peaceful and unexpected detour.

I'd show you photos of our breakfast in my normal fashion but once we saw those platters of food we completely forgot to take pictures. Yum.

Chrissy Nolan | N Mississippi Ave | Portland

What a small world. I took Chrissy's photo in Seattle 3 years ago then all these years later I happen upon her outside The Fresh Pot coffee shop on Mississippi Ave during my trip to Portland last week. She looked so lovely reading her book over coffee. She made this foldover backpack, I love it! What a simple and perfect design. It's like a clutch, a tote and a backpack all rolled into one.

I took the train down to Portland last week to meet up with Don and spent all three days of my visit walking aimlessly and stumbling upon the most amazing stores, restaurants and people. I really do adore that city.

I was so excited to find Lodekka parked on N Williams and Falling Street. This beautiful British double decker bus is filled on both floors with unique vintage finds and Erin was wonderful to chat with while taking a much needed break from walking.

For more about Lodekka check out Erin's website.

Friends in Warm Places

fresh lemon avocado whole foods recipe
My friend Piper sent me a surprise care package containing fresh lemons and avocados from her grandmother's yard in California. I just can't believe the different a freshly picked lemon makes. I wanted to let these two ingredients shine so last night for dinner I made a simple salad with only baby greens, avocado, sunflower seeds and a homemade dressing made with the lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, fresh taragon, fresh parsley, salt and pepper. The lemon and avocado were incredible! I immediately got so excited for all the produce that is about to start coming into season. Farmers markets here we come!

Grey Gardens Mimosa Brunch Ticket Giveaway: Winner!

Originally, I intended to choose my favorite from your submissions but then the emails started coming in... You guys are so creative! A velvet romper (Xela), a chartreuse turban (Alicia), Grandma's fur coat (Tina) and this frog purse sent in by Amanda who might look familiar to you from being featured numerous times on the blog. It was given to her as a secret Santa gift last Christmas.

I knew by the first day that I wasn't going to be able to pick so instead I used put all the names into a virtual name drawing program online and let fate decide because I would have chosen all of your entries if I could have.

And the winner is: Victoria Shutts

She wrote "... My quirkiest item in my closet is a little brown leather fanny pack. I'm not ashamed. At all." Victoria blogs at Cat's Dreaming in Keylime.

Thank you everyone for entertaining me with your submission and thanks to SIFF for contacting me with this idea. I should do more things like this on the blog. I love hearing from you all about your personal style.

Tickets are still available for the Grey Gardens mimosa brunch. You can purchase them at SIFF's website. It is going to be a really fantastic day. Enjoy!

Grey Gardens Contest Update: Win TWO Tickets!

SIFF contacted me today to offer one more ticket to the Grey Gardens mimosa brunch. The winner will get both tickets so that you and a friend can go to the event together.

If you missed Tuesday's post here's the scoop:

SIFF is putting on a Grey Gardens mimosa brunch on April 14th at the Uptown Theater. The morning will start with an 11am mimosa reception followed by a showing of Grey Gardens, a continental brunch at 1:15 and finally at 2:00 they will be playing The Beales of Grey Gardens which is the follow up film that included extra footage not used in the original documentary. Tickets are selling quickly for this event because, well... it sounds totally fantastic.

I have two tickets that SIFF has graciously provided for me to give away to one of you. To win these two tickets email me at itsmydarlin@gmail.com and tell me the quirkiest thing in your wardrobe that you love to wear. I think that we all have some Little Edie in us. My most treasured oddball item is a big alligator brooch that I wear on everything from coat lapels and the waist of dresses to hats and bags. It's weird and I love it. Can't wait to read your submissions. The contest ends this Saturday April 6th at midnight. I'll announce the winner on Sunday here, on the Facebook page and on Twitter.

I stopped Jon because I liked his style but got the bonus of meeting a member of a band that I absolutely adore. Jon is a singer and guitarist in The Head and the Heart, a band I have been listening to tirelessly since hearing them play at a KEXP concert at the mural a few years back. As I told Jon, The Head and the Heart is Don's and my happy music.

Jon also pointed me in the direction of the website of his very talented girlfriend; photographer Genevieve Pierson. I had such a great time perusing her blog and seeing the amazing shots that she has been taking with her Rolleiflex camera. Stunning.

I paid a visit to UW today so that I could catch the cherry blossoms in their full glory. The petals were falling like snow so I'm glad I didn't procrastinate.

Isn't Indigo fantastic? I think this is the perfect follow up to yesterday's discussion about Grey Gardens

Win two tickets to SIFF's Grey Gardens Mimosa Brunch

little edie seattle street style fashion it's my darlin'
(Mary-Ann originally posted in 2012)

I remember exactly when my fascination with Little Edie began. I read an article about the groundbreaking 1976 documentary Grey Gardens in Ten Magazine in 2006 and on the opposite page, for the first time, I saw that now famous image of Little Edie wearing a big fur coat and posing like a movie star in front of her dilapidated home. I saw the documentary shortly after that and found myself completely enthralled with Little Edie's style. She was able to create these incredible outfits using shirts as skirts, tights under skirts over pants, broaches as headscarf adornment and always a coat of bright red lipstick. She had no money, no hair and a home that kept her secluded from the popular culture of her time yet Edie's personal style flourished. I was truly inspired.
