Hungry Hearts Cupcakes and PDX

Have you seen that part on Portlandia that takes place at a feminist book store? When we tracked down the Hungry Hearts Cupcakes truck (@HHcupcakes on twitter) it happened to be smack dab in front of In Other Words bookstore, or better known on the show as Women & Women First bookstore. If you haven't seen Portlandia yet... I insist. It is a comedy masterpiece.

We ended up choosing the Red Velvet, the Dark Chocolate with dolce de leche frosting and Maldon sea salt, the Almond Joy chocolate cupcake with almond frosting and coconut flakes and the Lemon Drop with fresh lemon curd and wilberry frosting.

Later on in the trip I was so excited when I noticed Black and White cookies through the window at Lovejoy Bakers in the Pearl District. I B lined it straight for the counter and ordered one. I eat mass quantities of these when we are in NY but I've never seen them out here. My family back east all think I am crazy for loving these cookies as much as I do. I like them so much that they were served at our wedding in NY. Lovejoy did a delicious take on the classic cookie but it just wasn't the same as the ones that I've been eating since I was little.

Swift PDX

The Don and I got away to Portland for a few days recently and there was a whole lotta good eatin. Our first night in town was spent at Swift Lounge in Northeast Portland. What a great find! Suped up bar food and imaginative drinks served in massive Ball jars. We had lofty plans of going to a few other places but found ourselves making our way down the menu and letting the evening slip right by on the front patio instead. Before it got dark I snapped these photos.

Stoned Finch- Cucumber infused vodka, lime, basil, cucumber, house elderflower syrup. House Sangria
Goat and blue cheese fondue fries

Garden State & Native Bowl PDX

We did a lot of food cart grubbing in Portland. Mostly at the Mississippi Avenue cluster. I thought I would post about the highlights rather than inundate you.

The best of the weekend for me was that Chickpea Sandwich up there from the Garden State stand. Such a perfect sandwich! Sunset magazine published the recipe back in 2009. I'm definitely going to give it a try. The Don got their Meatball Hero and said it was amazing too. In fact, I believe his exact words were "That was the best meatball sub I've ever had" Wowza! Portland Monthly food critic Karen Brooks did a video on the Portland food cart scene as well as a video of a day in the life of Kevin Sandri, owner of Garden State. Fun videos... I want to go back to Portland right now and eat!

On our last day in town we went back to Mississippi for our final meal in town and I got the Mississippi Bowl from the Native Bowl stand. BBQ soy, vegan ranch, house coleslaw, scallions and jasmine rice. It was a really interesting mix of flavors.

Such a small world, when I told Jon what the photos were for he told me that he works at MSN Postbox with Willie who did that interview with me recently.

I took quite a few photos towards the end of last week while Seattle got a bonus round of summer weather. You'll be seeing those photos on here this week as the drizzly weather outside assures us that fall is indeed on its way.

Holly

Thomas & Broadway on Capitol Hill
This perfect floor length skirt was once part of Holly's choir ensemble when she was in school. Although we can't hold on to everything it is amazing how styles and cuts always seem to make their way back around with time. It is for this reason that my closet is quite a bit more full than it should be but it never ceases to amazing me how many things I put away towards the back of my closet only to remember them a few years later and fall in love all over again. The key is holding on to the really well made items. Quality fabric and tailoring have much more difficulty being out of style.

Jewel Mint Discount

In case you all haven't heard of Jewel Mint yet, it is a new website created by Kate Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter. It is subscription based and each month you get one piece of limited edition jewelry that you choose based on a selection provided using a style profile to help pinpoint what style of accessories are best fit to you... Bohemian, classic, modern... there is a mix of everything.

I get a lot of people contacting me about new products and promotions to tell you guys about and generally they aren't of much interest to me but I have to say that after wandering around on Jewel Mint's site it's pretty neat and I thought it was worth sharing. I had fun taking the style quiz and the results ended up being a very close match with what I like to wear (the above two are my favorites so far). Oh, and big points for the fact that it is completely affordable. Check it out and if you decide you want to subscribe the ladies over at Jewel Mint sent me a code that will give you 50% your first month so that you can try it out. Enter seattle772 at checkout.

Andie & Assemble Gallery

Seattle Street Style Assemble Gallery
I stopped by Assemble Gallery & Studio recently while I was in Phinney Ridge for dinner and Andie was holding down the fort.

I hadn't heard of this spot before. In addition to being a gallery space for local art it is also a workshop for you to let your inner creative shine. They have so many different workshops that you can take ranging from basic sewing to book binding and paper cutting. What a great resource! I ended up taking home some really adorable stationary made by Iifant Press from the retail shop in front.

Carly & Nate- 2nd & Pine

This lovely couple moved to Seattle from Salt Lake City. I haven't spent time in SLC for years (I used to live a fews hours away during my time spent growing up in Idaho Falls). They told me that Salt Lake has gotten pretty stylish in recent years. I did some hunting to see if I could find a fashion/street style blog for the area and wasn't able to come up with anything. If you guys know of any let me know...

Samantha & Kate

Samantha & Kate Rusek- 16th & Denny
These two were on their way to try out this slide when I stopped them for a photo so I told them to carry on. We ended up talking for a bit after their slide. It just so happened that I caught Kate on this visit to Seattle to see Samantha (her sister). Kate calls Savannah home and she designs bags, including the one she is holding, using karate belts. Such a brilliant idea!

A Visit From Henry

My stylist Henry was visiting from San Francisco recently so I got a chance to catch up with him, have him work some magic on my hair and gush about our mutual love for San Francisco (of which I will be going to for my birthday in October!). A visit from Henry can't go without some photos of what he is wearing. He has such great style.

If you live in the San Francisco or have plans of visiting there I can't recommend Henry enough as a stylist. He always has such insight into what will and will not look good on a person. If I have an idea for my hair and he doesn't think it will look good he tells me and then he dreams up an even better plan than the one I came into the salon with. You can find him at Edo Salon in Lower Haight.

Hill Style- Austin

Austin was my choice for this week's Hill Style feature over at CHS. He manages not to come across as trendy while wearing so many great trends. Maybe that is the secret behind classic style. Sneaking "trends" in while looking well put together and timeless.

There is a close up of these amazing old school Docs over there as well. Please disregard the grumpy/weird comments that people have left that post. CHS, like all high traffic sites, tends to be a haven for the disgruntled to take out their pent up anger.

Wearable Art

Local designer Michael Cepress has been featured on It's My Darlin' a few times. I'm a big fan of his work. He also teaches a workshop called Wearable Art. The next workshop weekend is Sept 10th-11th and I am so excited to be attending this time around after hearing more about it from him. Whether your interests lie in drawing the human figure, in fashion design or just art in general I think this workshop will be extremely enriching.

You can find out more or inquire about future workshops by contacting Michael: info@michaelcepress.com
