Jessica

Jessica- On 5th & Pine in downtown Seattle.

This may be one of my favorite photos yet simply because of how well and how confidently Jessica wears this outfit. My goal from the beginning with photographing street style here in Seattle has been to capture people's personal style... not what is trendy, not what I necessarily think will be popular with readers, and not even what I think defines the way Seattle dresses. I simply look for people who seem to exude a true comfort in what they are wearing and look good because they are dressing in a way that makes them happy. Because Jessica was doing just that when I saw her she looked absolutely stunning to me.

Ana- This lovely girl works in the downtown Seattle Nordstrom handbag department. I thought her outfit was exceptionally fetching and a great change of pace from the normal black clothing palate that is often required when working in retail.

Dre

Dre- On Pine St in front of Barneys.

I see Dre just about every week performing on Pine St and in Pike Place Market. He is an incredibly talented singer song writer. I remember the first time I heard him. My husband and I were at the market and we heard a gorgeous voice coming from the lower arcade. We found Dre off the beaten path in a back corner completely in his own world with his music. It was so impressive to watch and ever since I always hope I catch him playing when I am out and about downtown. And to top it all off, he's always dressed so well with a creative and classy style.

Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse

I get so excited every month when my Vegetarian Times magazine comes in the mail. The most recent issue had a great section on easy raw cooking and when I saw that there was a recipe for Live Chocolate Mousse I had to make it immediately. The main ingredient is shocking and a little bit off putting but that just made me all the more interested:

3 Hass avocados (neither underripe nor overripe)
1/4 cup plus 3 Tbs raw agave nectar
1/4 cup plus 2 Tbs raw cocoa powder
3 Tbs raw almond butter
1 tsp lemon juice
Pinch ground cinnamon
Pinch ground nutmeg or cardamom
1/2 tsp flavored extract such as hazelnut, orange, almond, mint, coffee, or cherry (optional)

Puree all ingredients in food processor 3 to 4 minutes, or until smooth and creamy, scraping down sides of bowl occasionally. Transfer to bowls and serve immediately.

Some of the raw ingredients can be difficult to find and very expensive at some stores when not sold in bulk so if this is the case for you then you can use them in their non-raw form and still make a really tasty vegan mousse. I used Green & Black brand cocoa powder, nutmeg rather than cardamom, and a hazelnut flavored extract. The result... completely INCREDIBLE! I was expecting a strong avocado flavor but once blended all that remained of the avocado was its creaminess. The cocoa is so strong that it covers up what you expect to be a sweet guacamole flavor and leaves an exquisite and insanely rich chocolate creation. I had a lot left over and I was weary of how the mixture would react to sitting in the fridge for a day. It probably would have been fine but just to be safe I split the remainder into four small glass Pyrex dishes and put them in the freezer so that I could have a serving each night for the rest of the week. The next night I put a container in the fridge for a bit then had it after dinner. It was so amazing frozen, just like ice cream. I'm already planning out creative ideas for my next batch like maybe a spicy chile chocolate flavor.

In addition to its severe chocolaty goodness this moose only took me about 15 min to make. Don't let the avocado freak you out. It works perfectly.

Such a great coat, if I had been thinking I would have asked her to put it on for a shot... I guess we'll just have to use our imaginations. I really liked the color combination of her outfit.

Flutter of Portland

I've always dreamed of opening a shop filled with beautiful clothes and objects both old and new but with my outlandish (or as I like to call it; unique) taste it always felt like an unreasonable goal. Well, last Friday I discovered that the place I have always dreamed of creating already exists on Mississippi Avenue in Portland and it is called Flutter. I knew the second I walked in that I would be there for a while.

Every inch of this curiosity shop is filled with carefully picked items ranging from fine apothecary perfumes and locally designed jewelry to early-mid 1900's dresses and taxidermy. I was reminded of the NY Times article I posted about last year on the New Antiquarians. I feel so inspired by this mix of old and new.

"King", Flutter's sweet sweet shop cat, is at home amongst all the Flutter clutter.

I left with these two lovelies. A 1950's tiered lace blouse and a frisky little vintage sun bather. I'm really excited about both of them.

Owner Cindy Tiehen Rokoff is previously from Seattle. She owned a boutique here on Capitol Hill called Dirty Jane's. With Flutter, she has created a one of a kind place in which you feel like you have stepped into a whimsical yet gritty dream. I saw a new side of Portland on this trip while wandering the city with my dear friend Amenee. There is so much I still need to see on future trips. So readers, what other places are not to be missed? I want to check out a new neighborhood each visit and I would hate to unknowingly walk past an incredible spot.

This immensely adorable couple recently moved to Seattle. They ended up finding their home in one of the historic Pioneer Square buildings that the Underground Tour goes through. From the look of their personal style I have a feeling that old apartment is pretty spectacularly decorated. I've often wondered what it would be like to live in Pioneer Square... they love it.
