Oh Pumpkin... (and ankle news)

This is, by far, my favorite time of year. The fall layers, the crisp air, the beautiful colors. But most of all, I LOVE harvest foods. Specifically, I can't get enough pumpkin and squash. The Don and I went out to Woodinville and picked out some pumpkins recently and it has been a pumpkin cooking extravaganza here ever since. I thought I would share some of these magical creations with you guys. Oh, and a little update on the ol' ankle. I go back in to see the orthopedic doctor next week and that is supposed to be when I find out if I get to stop using the crutches and get back to walking with the help of this oh-so-lovely walking boot I've been wearing. Cross your fingers for me. I'm going Crazy not being able to walk. Not to mention I am dying to get out and start taking photos of you guys again. It's been so long! Sometimes I'll be in the car and I see someone crossing the street looking so great and I get tempted to start approaching people even though I'm using crutches... then I think about the logistics of taking those photos with no hands and it all gets a little tricky. Oh, how I miss my foot. But, hopefully in the next two weeks I will be semi back on my feet again. We'll see.

So for now, more food! And next week will be my last CHS feature until I am able to get out and take photos again. It is the last photo left taken on Capitol Hill prior to the fated day that my mobility was taken away from me.

Now, pumpkin time:
Pumpkin Brownies: A recipe suggestion from my friend Veronica at La V En Rose. These were so flavorful and moist. They were like pumpkin version of a cakey brownie recipe.
Pumkin cream sauce with portabellas, fresh sage and fresh romano cheese.
And the biggest hit yet... and by yet I mean of ALL the things that Don has made me... Pumpkin soufflé brulee. Every bite I took was followed by hand clapping, "oh-my-gosh"ing and leaning back for a second to take it all in before having the next bite. It was so rich and satisfying. This is my new favorite dessert. Let me know if you want the recipe and I will have Don write it down for me.

Now I'm hungry. I'm going to go have some dinner.

*Update* (As requested...)
Pumpkin Souffle Brulee Recipe:

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups fresh roasted or canned pumpkin, mashed
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional
  • Bakers sugar and torch to brulee after baking, optional
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger (if used) and beat until mixed.
Pour into souffle/brulee dishes and cook until firm (about 35-40 min). Brulee a layer of sugar on top with torch.

It's My Darlin' on TV

The lovely Darcy Camden, founder and chief stylist of Styled.Seattle, was on New Day on Monday morning for a segment covering Seattle street fashion. I was so flattered that she chose to feature my photos of Jan and that she took the time to discuss It's My Darlin' during her segment. What an honor!

Darcy is a true expert at what she does. She has been called Seattle's own Stacy London since her work on Ambush Makeover. If you are in need of a closet overhaul or if the idea of going shopping terrifies you it might be time get in touch with Darcy. She'll go through your closet with you, determine what you need and what your goals are, and help you accomplish those goals either by shopping with you or going out and doing the shopping for you (this applies to you too gentlemen). Right now I'm sure most of you are either either thinking "I need this!" or "How do I get this job?".

Thanks again Darcy!

Shannon & Ampersand As Apostrophe

I passed Shannon on 6th & Pine downtown. Her great bangs were what initially caught my eye but once I stopped her and we started chatting I noticed her rock star outfit and incredibly unique and gorgeous bag handmade from a worn in vintage mailbag. The bag was designed by Shannon's friend J. Park of local handbag brand Ampersand AS Apostrophe located in Fremont. Check out this piece on the "It" Bag and J.Park by Seattle Met's Laura Cassidy. You can find these bags at Fremont gallery Coming Soon.

Brass Razoo

I have wanted to own a boutique since I was a teenager. Sometimes I come across places that are along the lines of the shops that I have imagined bringing to life. I found one recently that was what I have always dreamed of creating but so much cooler than what my imagination was able to concoct. While visiting Idaho my friend Jamie of Poppipetals and I made a stop at Brass Razoo in Nampa (about a half hour drive west of Boise). Jamie had been telling me about this shop all day during our thrifting adventure but I never could have anticipated the concept she explained to me being so beautifully executed.
Owner Elise Vaughn is originally from Australia but ended up in Idaho when her husband (who she met at college in California) was transferred there for work. She opened the shop a little over three years ago when her incredible creativity pulled her away from social work and brought her into what has turned out to be her true calling... bringing Idaho beautiful things to wear and put in their homes.

Elise repurposes everything from furniture and lamps to jewelry and dresses and then sells them at irresistible prices. I found myself a cozy wool sweater for $20... eyed several different necklaces created from pieces of antique jewelry for $25 each... I even considered renting a Uhaul and refurnishing my living room with several revamped chairs, a coffee table on wheels and an antique couch that looked like it had never been used (nothing over $150!).
You can tell that design comes naturally to Elise the second you step into the store. Everything there has a personal touch. She was so excited to tell me the story behind anything I was interested in at the shop and each item felt very carefully chosen and perfectly placed. The best way I can describe BR is that it is like an all handmade and totally affordable Anthropologie.
I know that most of you readers live here in Seattle but I have a few of you over in Boise. Go say hi to Elise and find yourself some amazing treasures! I'm still strongly considering the Uhaul plan.
